Unless one is using the insurer's call centre, an owner

will need the old and new tag details in order to ​complete the claim form or claim link details.

The blog article explains by example using one of the ​manufacturer's codes from a tag.

In broad strokes, if a geyser is still within it's warranty ​period, the manufacturer will replace a failed geyser, ​whereas outside the warranty period, the insurer will ​usually replace, subject to limits and excess. Hence the ​need for the old tag, in order to verify the age and ​warranty period when claiming from insurance.
